Italy Intensifies Crackdown on Luxury Fashion Sweatshops Amid Worker Exploitation
Milan, Italy – Italian authorities are escalating their efforts to combat worker exploitation within the supply chains of high-end fashion brands. The latest development sees Loro Piana, the esteemed cashmere house owned by LVMH, placed under judicial administration for a year following investigations into severe labor abuses.
This move marks Loro Piana as the fifth major luxury brand, including Valentino, Dior, Armani, and Italian handbag company Alviero Martini, to face judicial oversight since 2023 for similar allegations. The widening crackdown highlights systemic issues within Italy's luxury goods manufacturing sector, where a fragmented network of subcontractors often employs illegal and underpaid workers under deplorable conditions.
The investigation into Loro Piana revealed that the company allegedly subcontracted production through shell firms that further outsourced work to Chinese-owned workshops in Italy. These workshops reportedly engaged in exploitative practices, forcing laborers to work up to 90 hours a week, seven days a week, for as little as 4 euros an hour. Workers, some of whom were undocumented immigrants, were found living in unsanitary conditions within the factories themselves, and a case involving a worker being physically assaulted for demanding unpaid wages brought the issue to light.
While Loro Piana itself has not been charged with criminal offenses, the Court of Milan found that the brand "culpably failed" to adequately oversee its suppliers, prioritizing profit maximization over ethical labor practices. Loro Piana has stated that a supplier subcontracted work without their knowledge, violating contractual obligations, and that they terminated relations with the supplier upon discovery of the issue.
Prosecutors are actively investigating the owners of the contracting and subcontracting companies for labor exploitation and employing unauthorized workers. The court's ruling mandates an external administrator for Loro Piana to implement robust monitoring mechanisms and ensure compliance with labor laws and ethical standards.
