Disney has lifted the curtain on the much-anticipated next chapter of James Cameron’s sci-fi saga, ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’, by unveiling the film’s first trailer at their headquarters on Monday. Audiences eager for a glimpse will have to head to theatres, as the trailer will premiere exclusively before showings of Marvel’s *Fantastic Four: First Steps* starting Thursday, July 25.
The new footage marks a dramatic shift for the blockbuster franchise. For the first time, the central villain is not human but a Na’vi: Varang, the formidable leader of the Ash Clan, voiced by *Game of Thrones* star Oona Chaplin. Varang and her rebellious clan introduce a new layer of conflict, threatening Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri’s (Zoe Saldaña) family from within Pandora. “Your goddess has no dominion here,” Varang warns, hinting at spiritual and moral divides between the Na’vi tribes.
Director James Cameron previously told Empire magazine that Varang represents a departure from the earlier ‘good Na’vi vs. bad human’ formula. “This character will do anything for her people, even things we might consider evil. This film evolves the conflict, showing the complexities of internal strife,” Cameron said.
‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ picks up where ‘The Way of Water’ left off, following the Sully family after the tragic death of their eldest son, Neteyam. As Jake Sully puts it in the trailer: “We cannot live like this, baby. We cannot live with this hate,” signaling a story that is as much about family as it is about survival and reconciliation.
Box office expectations are sky-high. The two previous ‘Avatar’ films each grossed over $2 billion, ranking among the world’s most successful movies. If *Fire and Ash* matches its predecessors, ‘Avatar’ would become the only franchise with three films surpassing the $2 billion mark.
Avatar: Fire and Ash is scheduled for global release on December 19, 2025. Two additional sequels are planned for 2029 and 2031, promising more adventures in Cameron’s ever-expanding universe.
